In the context of the institutional investment process, what is alternative data and how is it used?

This course explores the alternative data ecosystem, R&D process flow, and modeling and investment insights. It offers practical portfolio examples for both fundamental and quantitative investors, reviews alt data trends and case studies, and includes a section on standards and compliance.

The course is the first of its kind aimed at working professionals, and only assumes a basic knowledge of statistics and finance. Experience working in financial markets is recommended.

**Faculty Expert:**

GENE EKSTER is an adjunct professor at NYU, where he teaches a course on alternative data in finance. He is also the CEO of AltDG, an alternative data software company. Previously, he managed the alternative data team at Point72 Asset Management and worked in alternative-data roles at Balyasny Asset Management, Lone Pine, 1010 Data, and Majestic Research. Gene is a board member of IDSO (a compliance organization), Eagle Alpha, Ottoquant, and Super Signal Capital. He holds a degree in Artificial Intelligence from U.C. Berkeley, an MBA from Cornell University, and is a CFA charter holder.

This course, from the authors of “[The Book of Alternative Data](https://www.amazon.com/Book-Alternative-Data-Investors-Managers/dp/1119601797)”, outlines a nine-step approach to integrating alternative data into any investment process. From setting up a vision and strategy and identifying appropriate datasets, to signal extraction and deployment in production, it instructs learners in the process of making money by investing with alternative data. The course discusses how to structure teams to use alternative data, and presents several use cases for web data, satellite imagery data, consumer transaction data, and more.


**Faculty Experts:**

SAEED AMEN is the founder of Cuemacro and co-founder of Thalesians. Over the past fifteen years, Saeed Amen has developed systematic trading strategies at major investment banks including Lehman Brothers and Nomura. He is also the author of Trading Thalesians: What the ancient world can teach us about trading today (Palgrave Macmillan) and is the coauthor of The Book of Alternative Data (Wiley).

ALEXANDER DENEV is a former Head of AI and the Data Science team for Financial Services - Risk Advisory. His responsibilities included development of AI products and advisory around risks and ethical implementation of AI. He also focussed on Alternative Data, AI for Data Quality and AI for Retail Banking. Previously, Alexander was a former Head of Quantitative Research & Advanced Analytics at IHS Markit.

Prior to that, Alexander has worked in Risk Dynamics (McKinsey & Company), The Royal Bank of Scotland, European Investment Bank (EIB) and European Investment Fund (EIF), National Bank of Greece and Societe Generale.

Alexander holds a degree in Mathematical Finance from University of Oxford where he has been a Visiting Lecturer on Bayesian Risk Management and Alternative Data. He wrote several papers and books on quantitative topics, ranging from stress testing and scenario analysis to asset allocation through Machine Learning techniques and alternative data.

Far from just fun & games, the mobile gaming industry is now big business. In 2021 consumers spent ~$90bn on mobile games, with eight separate titles each grossing over $1bn in revenue. The success and popularity of mobile gaming has spurred significant M&A activity: with Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and Take Two Interactive all making significant moves to bolster their respective exposure to this fast growing industry. Further, other tech giants such as Netflix and Meta are rolling out their own gaming portfolios. With the growing interest in the space, it is imperative for public and private investors to have visibility on top performers and emerging trends. Having access to mobile app downloads, revenue, users, and time spent can help investors better understand research top mobile games and publishers. Additionally, insights at the category and country level can provide investors with the information necessary to identify emerging trends. 

This course will provide an overview of the growing mobile gaming industry (including relevant subgenres), discuss how to benchmark top games and publishers, analyze M&A activity, and identify new trends.

Defined as non-traditional data that can be used in the investment process, alternative data has gained increased attention in the investment industry over the last decade. Essentially alternative data has come to describe data outside of market data such as market price data, tick data, volume and fundamental data. Alternative data has been gaining popularity over the last decade with surveys suggesting up to half of buyside funds are using it.
Alternative data users were once limited to quant funds, but it is not just buyside firms that stand to benefit from the surging availability of alternative data sources. Very soon alternative data users included other financial services firms and verticals including private equity and corporates (the latter refer to it as “external data”).

Alternative data opens the firm to new opportunities and sources of alpha or insight, but it also potentially opens the firm to new risks. To come to grips with this surging demand, legal and compliance teams on the buyside have had to upskill and educate themselves on considerations unique to alternative data. Compliance teams now need to place much greater emphasis on concepts such as data provenance and anonymization techniques.

This course explores legal and compliance considerations related to the alternative data landscape and provides interesting case studies to illustrate the exciting developments.
